According to the British government over a million people moved to the UK in 2023 through the Student visa, Skilled Worker visa, Innovator Founder visa, amongst other visa routes. And given the UK is one of the top destinations for people worldwide it is vital to fully research all the options you have to secure a British passport.
In this blog the FCF Academy team looks at three ways in which you could move to the UK and work towards Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
Apply for jobs from your home country
If you are a professional or a recent graduate look for jobs in your home country with international companies, that have operations in the UK, with British companies or a local company that deals with the UK. This will help you in many ways, including familiarising yourself with British business culture; building your network of contacts in the UK and opening the potential to be transferred to the UK through your existing employment.
Having this kind of experience will also be greatly help you secure a job in the UK as the employer will be confident that you will be able to assimilate quickly, have a good understanding of the role and the business etiquette for the sector.
Study in the UK
This option does require an upfront investment of around £100,000 but it has some amazing advantages, including being able to work whilst you study for up to 20 hours a week; being able to stay in the UK for two years as an Undergraduate and three years as a Postgraduate to find a job. After you have completed your studies.
This period can be used to take up internships to build your CV or find an entry level job where the employer agrees to sponsor your Skilled Worker visa.
Apply for the Youth Mobility Scheme
If you are between 18-30 years old and from Australia, Andorra, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, New Zealand, The Republic of Korea, San Marino, Taiwan, and Uruguay you can come into the UK on a Youth Mobility Scheme
You can stay for two years, work in most jobs, be self-employed, and start your own business (as long as you don’t have employees) or use this time creatively to find a permanent position with an employer eligible to sponsor you under the Skilled Worker Visa.
Whichever of the three options you choose will result in having to ultimately apply for the Skilled Worker visa if you want to stay in the UK indefinitely, under this visa you can remain in the UK as long as an employer sponsors you and after 1five years of being in the UK you can apply for permanent residency in the UK.
